September Spotlight : Honoring World Alzheimer’s Month

Every September, people around the globe pause to recognize World Alzheimer’s Month. It is a time to promote awareness, challenge stigma and support those whose lives are effected by Alzheimer’s disease. It’s more than just awareness: it’s about compassion, education and showing up for each other.

Why It Matters

Alzheimer’s affects millions worldwide. It touches those diagnosed, their families, caregivers and communities. Despite advancements in research, many still feel isolated, uncertain, or overwhelmed. World Alzheimer’s Month provides a platform to share stories, resources, and tools so that no one has to navigate this journey alone.

Inspiration Through Action

Caregivers demonstrate incredible strength and empathy every day. Individuals living with Alzheimer’s remind us that small moments of joy, recognition and connection are deeply meaningful. Sharing these experiences can encourage others and foster understanding.

How You Can Help and Where to Look for Support

If you or someone you care about is impacted by Alzheimer’s, the following trusted resources offer help, education and inspiration:

  • CNY Alzheimer’s Association — The Central New York chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association offers information about symptoms, local support groups, care planning and advocacy. You can visit them at alz.org/centralnewyork

  • Teepa Snow : Positive Approach to Care — Teepa Snow is a leading voice in how to provide compassionate, skilled dementia care. Her Positive Approach to Care methodology helps caregivers understand communication, dignity and meaningful connection. Read more at TeepaSnow.com

  • Silver Fox Senior Centers — Silver Fox connects seniors and their families with local services, community programming, and friendly support networks. A great place to find companionship, resources and help navigating the challenges that come with aging. Their work is detailed at silverfoxseniors.org

  • Living with Dementia — A local initiative offering education and peer support for families navigating Alzheimer’s and dementia. Want to learn more? Join us in attending the Living with Dementia Conference on Oct, 8. View event details here https://www.livingwithdementiacny.org/conference

What Can You Do This September and Beyond?

  • Educate yourself: Learn the early signs of Alzheimer’s and how to approach conversations with sensitivity.

  • Volunteer or donate: Local chapters like CNY Alzheimer’s welcome support; so do organizations like Silver Fox.

  • Support caregivers: Sometimes all someone needs is a listening ear or a bit of practical help.

  • Spread the word: Share info on social media, in your neighborhood, or at work. The more people understand Alzheimer’s, the more empowered our communities become.

World Alzheimer’s Month reminds us that everyone has a role to play. By raising awareness, connecting with resources and showing up for each other, we create a community filled with care, understanding and hope.
